Cu-Avana 5.0×50 Tuesday, Jun 28 2005

I decided to enjoy a smoke this evening while grilling in the back yard. I smoked one of my Cu-Avana Robustos. Here are the cigars vitals.

Country: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Connecticut Shade
Filler: Dominican Long filler
Size: Robusto 5.0″ x 50 ring

I really enjoy these cigars for a few reasons. They are mild in taste and smoke great. It has a nice slow, even burn and generates a lot of nice thick creamy smoke. I have smoked enough of these now to say that they are pretty consistent. I did have one that wouldn’t draw but you can run into that once and a while with any brand. This isn’t a top of the line cigar but it is a good quality smoke especially when you take its price tag into consideration. These robustos come in around $2 a stick retail, lower if you nab a box off of Cigarbid. That makes it a great cigar for the price conscious like me. They have a nice mellow flavor that doesn’t hang around past its welcome. If you are looking for a quality cheap smoke on the mild side I recommend these cigars.

Off topic already… Monday, Jun 27 2005

Started construction on a casino style poker table this weekend. I thought it would be cool to make the poker games with my buddies more authentic. I already have the nice clay poker chips so the table seemed like the next logical step. Here is a picture of what will soon be the table’s padded rail.

My Cigar Bio Friday, Jun 24 2005

**Note from the Author:  This post remains on the site for historical perspective.  This was written a very long time ago and has absolutely no relevance to the cigar smoker I am today.**

I figure while I’m waiting to smoke my next cigar, I should share a little info on myself as it pertains to my tastes (some may say lack of) in cigars.

I tend to gravitate towards the mild to medium flavored cigars, but I can appreciate a good full bodied strong cigar from time to time as well. My current favorites are 5 Vegas Gold and Excalibur on the medium to mild side and El Rey Del Mundo Oscuros on the fuller side of things. I did recently smoke a CAO L’Anniversaire Maduro that was very heavy and very strong. I caught a wicked buzz off that cigar. I really enjoyed it. It was probably the strongest cigar I ever smoked that I actually enjoyed. It had a very heavy flavor but I found it pleasant and enjoyable, not overpowering. I felt like I just finished a four course meal by the time I finished it.

Any way, I am a casual smoker. I sometimes go a month or so without a cigar, and then there are times when I can go thru three or four in a week. I am just a regular guy and I don’t get hung up on the super rare, super fancy, super pricey elite cigars. I absolutely love a good smoking cigar that runs about $2 bucks a stick. I think that’s the definition of cigar perfection. If it tastes good, burns even, has good smoke, and comes in at a cheap price, I love it. I’m not a rich man after all.

I also like a good drink with my cigar. I am a beer man. I love Guinness and it is always my beer of choice. Once and a while I like something lighter and I’ll have a Newcastle instead :) If I’m feeling really froggy, I’ll have some bourbon or scotch on the rocks with my cigar. I love whiskey and see no point in ruining it by mixing it with something.

So there you have it. A little information on the kinds of cigars I like. Maybe this will give some perspective on where I am coming from when I write some of my reviews. I am an amateur, not a professional reviewer of cigars. Just a regular guy sharing his opinions. Keep that in mind when you are reading my reviews.

In My Humidor Thursday, Jun 23 2005

I’ve spent a little time on Cigarbid recently so my humidor has filled up a bit. Here is what’s in there now:

El Rey delMundo Oscuro (oldest cigar in the box – >1yr old)
5 Vegas Gold Robustos
CU Avana Robustos
Gurkha Master Select Toro Grande
Excalibur #2
Excalibur #3
H. Upmann Naturals Tubos
Signature Collection Robusto
5 Vegas Gran Reserva Double Corona
Dunhill Peravias
Camacho 11/18 Liberty

1 – Coconut Mac Nut Volcano Cigar (gift from Hawaii safely sealed in a glass tube)

This is most likely what I am going to be smoking in the near future, but there is always a chance I may pick up something while I’m out somewhere. With a new baby, those opportunities to kick back with a smoke have become more rare so I’m not sure when I’ll have a review to post but I am sure it won’t be too long. I want to wait and review a new smoke as opposed to transferring something from my pen and paper journal.

How to start… Thursday, Jun 23 2005

I recently added a bit to my humidor. I figure a good way to kick things off is with a brief inventory of what I’ve got. Since I just got a bunch of new cigars, I can’t recall everything off the top of my head so I’ll do an inventory later tonight and post it. It will give everyone an idea of what I’m most likely to be smoking in the near future.

Welcome Thursday, Jun 23 2005

Welcome to my cigar journal. I have been keeping notes on the cigars I smoke for about a year now. I have a little leather bound journal which I would tape the cigar rings in and then jot down my thoughts on that particular cigar right below the ring. I’m somewhat of an IT geek and it occurred to my that my pen and paper cigar journal, while nostalgic, was a bit low tech for me. I really do enjoy writing in that journal and will probably continue to do so, but the IT geek in me figured it would be fun to start an electronic journal that others can see and comment on. The very definition of a blog I think. So here it is. Feel free to comment and share your thoughts. Although primarily a cigar journal, there will come a time, I am sure, that I’ll get off topic and discuss things like sports or poker. Lets be honest. What goes better with sports or poker than a really good cigar.

So I hope you like my little web site and that it takes off as a nice secluded corner of the web where we can all enjoy some good discussion on cigars.

Thanks for visiting.

-Matt
