CRA – Cigar Rights of America Wednesday, Jun 4 2008

Photobucket

I ran across this press release today. A new organization has been formed to defend the rights of cigar smokers. I think it’s a great idea and some big industry names are behind this thing. I hope time proves that this organization can be effective. As is the norm when these types of organizations launch, the announcement is a bit preachy, but everything it says is legitimate. See the press release below…

Oh, and if anyone from the CRA happens to see this post… Lose the sultry, cigar smoking woman from your website banner. In my opinion it hurts the credibility of the organization. I know sex sells, but but I don’t think it fits or is appropriate in this context.

CIGAR RIGHTS OF AMERICA ANNOUNCES THE FORMATION OF THE GRASSROOTS NON-PROFIT ASSOCIATION OF CIGAR ENTHUSIASTS TO FIGHT TOBACCO TAX INCREASES AND SMOKING BANS.

Los Angeles, May 30, 2008

FIGHTING TO PROTECT YOUR FREEDOM TO ENJOY CIGARS

“Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”
“Land of the Free”
“No Taxation Without Representation”

These are the principles on which America was founded. Unfortunately for cigar enthusiasts, the age-old pleasure of enjoying a cigar is under attack. On a daily basis, your freedom to enjoy a cigar is being stripped away by an overzealous, anti-smoking movement. Their tactics are varied; be it through supporting onerous cigar taxes or lobbying government for restrictive smoking bans. The anti-smoking movement will stop at nothing short of the complete prohibition of tobacco.

The Constitution of the United States ensures that all men and women have the freedom and the right to the pursuit of happiness. Unfortunately, cigar enthusiasts have slowly allowed these rights to be removed. Over the past twenty years, the anti-tobacco movement has broadened their reach and scope and are moving towards abolishing ALL forms of tobacco including cigars. Until recently there has essentially been very little organized opposition to their actions. And why should there have been? Most of us assumed that their attention was directed towards cigarettes.

Unfortunately, we were wrong.

Forty-seven states in America have enacted cigar taxes. Some states have gone as far as taxing cigars at a rate of 75%. Currently, the entire cigar industry is threatened by the Federal Government’s State Children’s Health Insurance Plan (SCHIP) that threatens to increase the Federal cigar tax by as much as 6,000% (no this is not a typo). If it were not for President Bush ‘s veto of the bill proposed by the House and Senate last fall, cigar enthusiasts would currently be paying exorbitantly high prices for the cigars they enjoy so much and nearly every cigar shop in America would have been forced out of business. The proposed bill, which will tax cigars to fund SCHIP, is not dead yet. After the House and Senate reconvene in September, they will again attempt to increase the Federal tax on cigars to expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Plan.

In addition to a tax increase on cigars, regularly introduced anti-smoking legislation has made it close to impossible for cigar enthusiasts to enjoy cigars. In many states, you are not allowed to enjoy a cigar at your local restaurant or bar. Cities around America are now proposing bans which will, if enacted, stop you from enjoying a cigar outside of public buildings. Who would have thought that the day would come when you cannot legally enjoy a cigar walking down the beach or sitting in your local park?

A number of manufacturers and retailers of the U.S. cigar industry have sponsored the formation of Cigar Rights of America (CRA). The founding sponsors of CRA are:

Corona Cigar Company

A Must Read for any Cigar Fan Monday, Feb 18 2008

Dan of New Havana Cigars details on his blog a trip he took to Esteli with Pete Johnson. He tells a great story in wonderful detail of his meeting Pepin and Jamie Garcia, and of all the great stuff he saw, smoked, and experienced. There is some good insider info in there about some new smokes on the way from those guys.

Support Your Local Tobacconist Friday, Dec 7 2007

My house (which contains two young children that attend daycare/preschool) has had a rough time with illnesses in the past few weeks. I myself was hit by two bugs in a row and that has put me way behind on my cigar reviews. I feel I am on the upswing but it may be a week or so before I get another review done. This got me to thinking what I could do on the blog in the mean time because the interval since my last post has been a bit longer than I usually like it to be. I have been reading all my favorite bogs while I’ve been under the weather. Cigar Jack has been running an interesting feature on his blog in which he reviews cigar manufacturers’ websites. It’s an excellent idea and I have enjoyed reading the articles. His recent post about the Perdomo website indirectly sparked a bit of inspiration for this post to help fill the void until I can smoke again.

Internet Cigar Retailers and the Local Brick & Mortar Tobacconists.

The business of selling cigars over the internet is a big one. There are a large number of HUGE internet cigar retailers that move a lot of product for the cigar manufacturers. That’s because there are a lot of cigar smokers out there who hit the internet looking for a good price on their favorite smokes. And why not? Right? Everyone likes to save a buck. Most of us aren’t rich enough to go blowing money without pause or concern, and the fact is a lot of rich guys are rich because they know how to save (and spend) money. The fact is the best prices on cigars are almost always to be found on the internet. The internet vendors have a lot of built in advantages over the local B&M shops. Often people can purchase cigars and avoid large local tobacco taxes. They have huge humidors that can house enormous selections and they have the audience to support such diversity in product. That large audience also leads to large volumes of sales which in turn earn the internet vendors leverage with the manufacturers to get price breaks and exclusive lines made just for their businesses. All things that help them keep prices down, and selection up. There is also a convenience factor with ordering online. These are all things the little local shop has a hard time competing with. I would ask that you not forget about your local shop and give them your business whenever possible.

I’m not trying to vilify the internet vendors. The internet vendors are great. They provide us with access to cigars we may otherwise be unable to get. There are times when you are going to buy online. The reasons are varied and I won’t enumerate them all here. Everyone’s reasons may be a little different. Maybe you don’t have a local shop to go to. Well, then you need the internet guys and God Bless them for being there for those of you in that situation. A prime example for me is CigarsDirect.com. Obviously I use them. The God of Fire cigars I posted pictures of in an earlier post were purchased from CigarsDirect. My local shop will most likely never have God of Fire in stock, nor Opus X much to the owner’s frustration. CigarsDirect is great for that hard to find stuff. My local also doesn’t stock Padilla because they don’t sell well but I like some of their lines. To get that stuff I have to go online. I am not suggesting we should stop using internet vendors. Internet vendors and local tobacconists can co-exist. Like I said, I’ve used online shops in the past. I’ll use them in the future. I am just asking that you not forget local tobacconist. Give them your business whenever you can even if it means paying a little more. Here’s why…

Your local cigar shop is selling you more than just a cigar, or cutter, or humidor, etc. You’ll notice above I said you will often find the best prices online. What I did not say is that you’ll find the best deals online. In my opinion. your best deal is most often at your local shop. How’s that you wonder? You can get your favorite cigar cheaper online you say? That may be true but in my opinion it’s not necessarily the best deal and here is why.

When you buy a cigar at your local cigar shop you are getting a lot more than just a cigar. You are also [usually] getting a place where you can go to sit and smoke and enjoy your cigars. Even before these smoking bans started sweeping the country it was hard for a cigar smoker to find a place in public where he could go to smoke a cigar. [I could write five pages on the hypocrisy of allowing cigarettes and not cigars but that’s not what this article is about]The local cigar shop has always filled this function nicely. In a lot of cases it does so especially well. If you have a really good local shop there is often a TV with a game on and a fridge in the back with some drinks in it. Combine that with a comfortable chair or cushy leather couch and you’re on cloud nine. Sounds good right? But wait there’s more! If you call now and mention this TV offer we will throw in… Sorry. I think Billy Mays, the OxyClean guy possessed me for a moment. But you do get more than just a place to smoke. You get a whole community of cigar smokers and experts to talk and interact with. A lot of local shops have a group of “regulars” that hang out around the shop. That combined with what is hopefully a knowledgeable staff in the store combines to make a great community of guys and gals that you can socialize with and discuss cigars with. One of the greatest aspects of this hobby is the social component. Cigar smoking and collecting is a very social activity, especially if you want it to be. I have spent many a Wednesday night at my local shop smoking cigars a shooting the bull with the great guys who frequent the place. We watch sporting events, and talk about cigars, women, family, work, politics, spirits, food, etc, etc., etc… You get the idea. It’s just a great time. That is what, in my mind, justifies paying a slightly higher price for my smokes. I want to send as much of my business to my local shop as I can, because I would hate to lose it. I want to make sure that I do my part to keep that place there so I can continue to enjoy the friends and community that it provides. The great thing about these communities that build around these shops is that they are so easy to become a part of. Membership to the club is open to anyone who wants to come in and take a seat. Cigar smokers are some of the friendliest and most accepting people I know. When I started hanging out at my local shop, I didn’t know anyone there. I just showed up one night, sat down and joined in the conversation. Years later I still go out there most weeks (two kids since I started going there has made me a little less of a regular attendee) and enjoy the company of guys I now call my friends.

I glossed over it a bit when I started talking about community, but the staff of the cigar shop is another big part of this. A shop with a friendly knowledgeable staff should not be taken for granted. In fact, you should make a point to make use of them. Talk to the staff and get to know them and let them get to know you. They are on the “inside” of the industry. They often have lots of news and background info on the different cigars and manufacturers that is fun to hear about. Also, if they get to know you and what you smoke, they can often help point you in the direction of some great cigars that you may have never otherwise discovered on your own. The staff of your local tobacconist is a great resource and one that you should take advantage of. The face-to-face service they can provide you while you are in their store really is valuable. The guys working at my local shop have even introduced me to some of the sales reps for the manufacturers. Those guys are great to talk to as well. Sometimes they’ll even hand you some free swag or cigars after talking with you. I have been lucky enough to become friends with some cigar reps. I really enjoy talking cigars with these guys. They know their stuff and are full of great stories.

Frequenting my local cigar shop has enhanced my enjoyment of cigars and this hobby in an almost immeasurable way. The same could happen for you. I hope I’ve shown how you really do get more than just a cigar with the money you spend with your local tobacconist. That’s what makes the price a good deal. Keep those favorite online vendors bookmarked. You’ll need them on occasion. Just be sure to go out to your local shop, buy and cigar, sit down and light up. Don’t get too wrapped up in what the price of the cigar is. What you get for that extra dollar you spend on the cigar is money well spent. In fact, it may be the best deal on a cigar that you’ll find.

House fails to overturn SCHIP Veto Thursday, Oct 18 2007

The legislation that would have resulted in a huge tax increase on cigar, and that was vetoed by President Bush failed to get the necessary votes need to overturn the veto today.  Here is a link to the story on MSNBC.

House fails to override Bush child health veto

Now the cigar tax was only one small part of a great many things that are wrong with the proposed SCHIP bill, but this isn’t a politics site so I’ll not get into that here.  However,  it is important that cigar lovers and cigar manufacturers realize that this was just the first failed attempt at over taxing cigars and the more attempts will be made in the future so the industry needs to stay vigilant in delivering its message about the devastating impact such a disproportionate tax increase will have on the industry and the countries that rely on it.

NC Smoking Ban Defeated Thursday, May 3 2007

I may be a little different than most smokers when it comes to the issue of smoking bans. I can see the value of it, but with a really big “IF”. IF it is written properly and provides for some common sense exceptions then I wouldn’t be opposed to it. This is an incredibly complex issue that I could not possibly cover in the context of a blog post nor would I try, but here are a couple of the highlights that I would like to see in a proposed “smoking ban”. Again these are simplifications and we could spend days discussing why these would or wouldn’t work, getting into the nitty gritty of how this would be done or how it can’t. Not what I’m going for here. This list is what I’d like to see, not how or if these things would/could be accomplished.

  1. Common sense exemptions for business that typically cater to smokers. Bars, Tobacco Merchants, Pool Halls, ect. Nothing about this prevents these establishments from going smoke free if they so choose.
  2. Some provision that protects a Private Business Owners rights to choose to cater to smokers if they want to do so. This one is tough because you need good controls and procedures as well as clearly defined criteria to qualify. It may also create to large of a loop hole rendering the ban pointless but I’d like to think there’s a way to make this work.
  3. If you allow children under the age of 18 into your place of business, then you cannot allow smoking, no exceptions.Could be tough to enforce but I think this one makes good sense.

The proposed bill in NC didn’t seem to have a whole lot of teeth compared to some bans we’ve seen in other states, but it was still far from ideal in my opinion so I was glad to see it fail.

Statewide Smoking Ban Fails to Clear N.C. House
RALEIGH, N.C. — An attempt to ban smoking in many public areas across North Carolina narrowly failed in the House on Wednesday, as tobacco territory Democrats sided with Republicans who called the measure an infringement on the rights of business owners.”We gave it our best shot,” said Rep. Hugh Holliman, D-Davidson, the bill’s sponsor, who pulled the measure from the floor calendar several times and took the bill through committee twice in a futile effort to win support.

House members voted 61-55 against the measure. More than a dozen Democrats from counties where tobacco is grown or manufactured opposed the ban.

Trivia: Tatuaje – La Selección de Cazador Friday, Jan 19 2007

As a big fan of the Tatuaje Brown lables, and Tatuajes in general, I was reading up on Pete Johnson and the Tatuaje line of cigars. I read somewhere that Pete loves his dogs. So much so, that he named the sizes of the Tatuaje Brown and Red labels so that the 1st letter in each size can be used to spell out the name of his dogs. In the case of the Brown label, the 1st letter of each size spells out the name of his dog Hunter.

Havana Cazadores
Unicos
Noellas
Tainos
Especiales
Regios

At this point, those who know Spanish may know where I’m going with this….

I was looking at my box of Tatuaje Regios the other day and noticed something for the 1st time. On the box is the “proper” name of the Brown label line, La Selección de Cazador. A literal translation is “The Selection of Hunter“. Cazador means Hunter in Spanish. This little detail escaped my notice before and I found it to be interesting so I thought I’d share this little bit of trivia. Not only the sizes, but the entire Tatuaje Brown Label line is named after Pete’s beloved dog. Some of you more observant types may have already caught this, but for other fans of these cigars that may have missed this factoid as I did… I hope you found it interesting.

He’s done the same with the Red label line. His other dog is named Havana, so…
The Havana VI sizes:

Hermosos

Victorias
Artistas
Nobles
Almirantes

The man loves his pups. I like that about him.

CIGAR NEWS: Toraño Noventa Friday, Apr 28 2006

A bit of news about a new cigar that is coming out in the Toraño line.

“AFTER 90 YEARS IN THE TOBACCO BUSINESS, TORAÑO COMMEMORATES THE OCCASION WITH THE NOVENTA.
In 1916, Don Santiago Toraño emigrated from Spain to grow tobacco in Cuba’s Pinar del Rio region. The family’s holdings grew to 17 tobacco farms throughout Cuba before the Toraños fled the island in 1960 after Castro siezed their land. Now, having become cigarmakers, the Toraños will release the Noventa (Spanish for 90) Series. The Nicaraguan puros have a wrapper grown in Pueblo Nuevo, near Esteli, and will come in
three sizes: robusto, toro and torpedo.”

From Cigar Insider

This is what one Toraño rep had to say about them on a forum discussion:

i have actually been lucky enough to smoke a couple of final release candidates. like the cigar insider article says, it’s a nicaraguan puro. the wrapper is gorgeous and oily. it’s got a slightly cocoa powder/reddish hue to it. it starts off as a mild to medium cigar but builds into a solid medium plus. to me, the most impressive thing about the cigar is it has an explosion of flavors yet maintains a smoothness not seen in very many cigars. the cigars are still young, but given a little age, i really believe the cigar will pick up the butteriness pams have. now i’m NOT saying these are in anyway going to be pams, i’m just saying that smoothness is evident in the noventa.

these cigars will definitely not blow away those guys who have lfd double ligero for breakfast, but it should hit those guys who love a full flavored cigar.
